In the run-up to the upcoming presidential election, a series of training courses in Togo is being organised for media professionals. It was therefore at the initiative of the Togolese Patronate of the Press that some forty Togolese journalists met from 17 to 18 January 2020 in Lomé to strengthen their capacity and acquire new knowledge that would enable them to play their full for a quiet election on 22 February. Training continues in the field.
"Media contribution in preventing violence and promoting the culture of peace during togo's 2020 presidential election" is the turn of this theme that journalists met for these two days of training in the capital Togolese. By providing this training to journalists, the TPP has set itself the goal of equipping media professionals on the legal basis and exercise of the right to communication, national legal bases and the responsibilities of the press in its together during the election period.
Beyond the knowledge of the texts, their understanding is essential especially for the men of the media who are given the fourth power. Making two moves with one stone, during this training, tPP officials will also explain to their colleagues the content of the new Collection of Legal and Regulatory Instruments of the 2020 Presidential Election made available to them. and which they will use to practice their craft according to the rules of the art in this delicate period. The USAID-funded "Right and Duty of Journalist in Elections" is a summary of many texts regulating the practice of journalism during elections.
This TPP initiative did not stop there. From 18 to 20 January, a training and awareness workshop on the same theme is being held in Kpalimé. It is also planned to redo this workshop in Kara from 30 to 31 January 2020 so that journalists from this locality can also acquire the knowledge essential to the smooth running of media coverage, especially just a few weeks before presidential election.
It should therefore be remembered that electoral and post-election periods are quintessential moments when we note not only the upsurge in violence in all its forms but also some slippages in the ranks of journalists who are could inflame the situation. So this training would allow this trade to be ready to play the appeasement card before, during and after the february 22 election.
